Daytona Beach has multiple public access points, and you can reach the shore on foot or by vehicle where access is designated. Volusia County describes beach driving in the Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach areas as a tradition dating to the early days of the automobile.

Pedestrians and bicyclists can access Daytona Beach at any hour, subject to tides and weather. For vehicles, Volusia County gives seasonal driving hours: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. from May 1 through October 31, and sunrise to sunset from November 1 through April 30, weather and tides permitting.

The city also describes driving in designated areas as allowed from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset. Because hours and access can change with conditions, check the official site before you go.

If you drive on the beach, keep to designated driving areas, park on the seaward side of conservation-zone markers, and follow the posted 10-mile-per-hour speed limit.

Drivers must use headlights and keep at least one front window open. Volusia County operates more than 60 off-beach parking lots through the ParkVolusia program, giving you a way to park away from the driving area.

How does Ormond Beach differ?

How does Ormond Beach differ?

Ormond Beach offers stretches where beach traffic is restricted, alongside access points with off-beach parking. The county’s driving map marks the area north of Granada Boulevard as a traffic-free zone, as well as the beach in front of Andy Romano Beachfront Park.

Andy Romano Beachfront Park has off-beach parking. The county map also identifies North Shore, Bicentennial, and Tom Renick parks in Ormond-by-the-Sea as parking locations. Ormond Beach driving may at times be limited to four-wheel-drive vehicles, so check conditions and access rules before setting out.

Beach-wheelchair availability is at the county’s Ormond Beach station on Cardinal Drive. That gives you a specific location to consider when planning an accessible visit.

When is Ponce Inlet a better fit?

When is Ponce Inlet a better fit?

Ponce Inlet is a useful choice if you want to combine beach time with inlet scenery or plan around its designated access points. Only the southern tip of Ponce Inlet is open to beach driving, according to the county’s ParkVolusia help page.

The county map marks Winterhaven and Lighthouse Point parks as off-beach parking locations. Beach-wheelchair availability is at a Ponce Inlet control tower. For a nearby outing beyond the shore, the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse is another local point of interest.

Inlet parks have separate admission rules from the county’s standard resident beach-parking permit: that permit does not include Lighthouse Point Park or Smyrna Dunes Park. Check the county’s current inlet-park requirements if either is part of your plan.

Beach safety, facilities, and local rules

Beach safety, facilities, and local rules

For swimming at Daytona Beach, choose a spot directly in front of a lifeguard. The city says trained lifeguards are posted along the beach, with water temperature, tide times, and surf conditions displayed on lifeguard stands.

Surfing areas have their own seasonal rules. From the Saturday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, designated surfing areas operate from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Outside that period, surfing is allowed in all beach areas except within 300 feet of the Daytona Beach Pier. The Daytona Beach Boardwalk and Pier can help you plan around that restricted area.

For accessible facilities in Daytona Beach, Sun & Surf Park at 726 N. Atlantic Avenue has 70 parking spaces, including 5 ADA-accessible spaces, an ADA beach-access ramp, showers, and bike racks.

The park is open daily, but parking is prohibited from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Beach ramps can also close because of tidal changes, repairs, or construction, so check the county’s access updates before choosing a ramp.
